April 5, 2019 - WhichMBA.net Reports from Providence, Rhode Island, USA

On April 4 -5, 2019, Brown University and IE University welcomed leaders from educational, business, and public institutions around the world to the 10th edition of “Reinventing Higher Education” in Providence, Rhode Island. Founded in 2010, the Conference aims to examine important issues and trends across different sectors and to engage key stakeholders to discuss the future of higher education, and how sectors can work together to build the human capital of tomorrow.

This year, the Conference is honored to have 35 speakers from 20 different countries to answer one key question: How can higher education institutions, governments, and the private sector address the needs of a changing workforce, and how can they create collaborative synergies among all three groups to create more efficient, equitable, and effective models for educational delivery? Amongst the speakers are Jim Yong Kim, former President of the World Bank Group, Christina Paxson, President of Brown University, and Santiago Iñiguez, President of IE University.

During the opening remarks, both President Paxson and President Iñiguez emphasized on the importance of educational institutions working more closely with governments and the private sector and taking advantage of technological advancement to help students develop the most critical skill sets in order to prepare them for a more technology-driven economy. This basis of that would be to make higher education more accessible, more affordable, and more global.

President Paxson is against a completely free higher education system, especially given that the return on higher education is extremely high. Instead, she urges the public sector and philanthropy to step in, so the universities can have a more diverse group of students.

President Iñiguez, on the other hand, stressed the importance for college students to “learn not how the world is but how the world should be”, and what it takes to transfer tomorrow

As the keynote speaker of this year’s conference, Mr. Kim shared his experiences with different countries around the world striving to create sustainable economic growth as well as a better higher education system, and during his discussion with President Paxson, he stressed the importance of the private sector stepping into the process of building human capital, which will enable the educational institutions to better utilize their limited resources.
