Taking an MBA at Peking University
Business Week has compiled a major database of world universities offering MBA and associated degrees. Taking as one, very famous, example, the Beijing International MBA at Peking University (BiMBA). This is, of course, at Peking University. (There must have been much academic wrangling about keeping that spelling. At first sight it looks silly but it grows on you. It tells you the university is older than the city name change.)
As in almost all Chinese universities the courses start in the middle of the year and last 18 months. There are typically 50 full time MBA students and about 100 on EMBA courses, which is a sort of top-up course for executives who have some years experience in business. It is NOT, as is so often and erroneously believed, some sort of superior MBA.
About a third of the students students are female and there are some overseas students, all from other parts of Asia.
Interesting that the average work experience of the students ranges from 36 t0 132. Given that those figures include EMBA students it still shows that most, perhaps all, students have a job first. The average age in 29 so that fits the picture.
222 people applied to the full-time MBA program in 2005 and the school accepted 28 percent so that competition is stiff but not ferocious.
The estimated cost for a resident is $16,466 a year which compares very favorably with the United States which at an equivalent establishment would be twice as expensive.
