SWJTU is a center of both education and research. It has three key disciplines at the state level, and seventeen at the ministerial and provincial level. Eight of its disciplines are authorized to engage special professors under the Changjiang Scholar Plan. Located at the university are also sixteen research institutes and fifteen research institutes involved in cross disciplines. Traction Power Lab, the only key state laboratory of the national transportation system, is based at SWJTU. There are also ten key laboratories at the ministerial level and another sixty-six teaching and research laboratories. The Modem Industry Technique Training Center and the National CAD Application Education and Training Center are located at the university as well. During the "Eighth Five-year Plan", over one hundred eighty scientific research projects have won prizes awarded by the state, the province and the Railway Ministry. Over nine thousand research papers have been published in academic journals within and outside the nation. SWJTU has established cooperative links with a large number of cities, enterprises, universities and research institutes. In addition to this, the network of SWJTU is now connected with the Internet. At the end of 2000, the first man-loading high temperature super-conducting maglev test vehicle in the world was born at SWJTU. At the exhibitions of great national achievements held in celebrations of the Fifteenth Representative Conference of Communist Party of China and the Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the testing maglev train was highly regarded and very positively remarked upon by Jiang Zemin and other Party and State leader.
