Digital economy at forefront of research for corporate community
2006-09-14
THE Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland is an internationally-recognized leader in management education and research for the digital economy.

A comprehensive business school, Smith offers undergraduates full-time and part-time MBA, Executive MBA, PhD and non-degree executive education programs. There are also research and outreach services for the corporate community.

In understanding that globalization is a key component of the digital economy, the Smith School has built a significant international presence with learning locations on four continents. In addition to its full-time MBA program in the United States, which draws a large percentage of Chinese and other foreign students, the Smith School delivers an EMBA program in China, with classes in Beijing and Shanghai.

Like the Smith School's EMBA program stateside, the EMBA in China prepares graduates to lead organizations in an economy fueled by technology, globalization and new venture opportunity.

The EMBA in China is a 54-credit, 18-month program that requires students to meet approximately once a month for four consecutive days. All classes are taught in English and by professors from the Smith School.

Electives option

The Smith School's global presence gives the China EMBA participants the opportunity to participate in electives every six months at their home school location or around the world, including Shanghai, Beijing, Zurich, Switzerland and College Park in Maryland.

Upon graduation, students receive a Master in Business Administration degree from the University of Maryland, Smith School of Business, as well as a formal certificate of program completion from UIBE.

The next Smith China Executive MBA classes for Shanghai and Beijing start in December and applications are now being accepted. More information about the Smith School China EMBA and other China executive education programs can be found at www.rhsmith-umd.cn. The phone number is (021) 2308-1100 in Shanghai and (010) 6510-2600 in Beijing.

The Smith School's full-time MBA curriculum integrates an in-depth education in core business functions (accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, information technology, logistics, management, and marketing) with cross-functional areas (electronic commerce, financial engineering, telecom, services marketing and supply chain management).

The school's cross-functional educational model has been recognized both nationally and internationally for its emphasis on business fundamentals, entrepreneurship and the application of information technology.

The full-time MBA program provides numerous experiential learning opportunities. The MBA Consulting Program, for example, exposes students to real management issues by assigning MBA teams as consultants to local and regional companies for a semester. The teams tackle operational and strategic problems, and then present their findings to senior management.

The US$2.3 million Mayer Fund provides hands-on experience in securities analysis and portfolio management to a select group of Smith MBAs. And, as associates in the US$20 million New Markets Growth Fund, a venture capital fund based at Smith, students identify potential investment opportunities and develop financial investment models.

Smith's full-time MBA is global, reflecting the diverse needs of students. A third of its students are international, representing 25 countries and regions, including Argentina, France, Nigeria, Russia, Japan, Turkey, Taiwan and Peru. The school participates in international semester exchange programs with 13 business schools.

The school's Office of Career Management provides dedicated, professional support to help students launch their careers. OCM links students directly to recruiters through a variety of services, including on-and-off campus recruitment and the online resume database, which matches a Smith MBA to the right industry position.

The OCM also participates in regional and national career forums and job fairs, such as the National MBA Consortium, the National Black MBA Conference, the National Society of Hispanic MBAs Career Expo, the International MBA Conference, the National Association of Women MBAs, the Career Services Council, and the Chazen Conference.

Smith's full-time MBA program is delivered at the school's main campus in College Park, Maryland, just outside Washington, D.C.

The area provides students with access to a global business center and a technology hotbed in an area rich with social, professional development and employment opportunities.
