AS the Chinese economy continues to grow, the need for well trained middle management that can compete internationally is becoming increasingly apparent. It is this need that is fostering the growth of international MBA programs on the Chinese mainland.

These well established international business schools are making the daunting decision of which MBA course to undertake much easier by setting up local branches and giving local graduate students a chance to study under internationally accredited professors.

One foreign school that has done a tremendous amount of work to establish themselves in Shanghai has been The University of British Columbia's Sauder School of business.

Since 1980, The University of British Columbia (UBC) has had a strategic partnership with Jiaotong University and over the years these two schools have formed a strong bond.

There are currently a number of other International MBA and EMBA programs being offered at Jiaotong University.

However, neither of these have the history of communication and cooperation that The University of British Columbia enjoys.

While UBC and Jiaotong University have been in contact for nearly 26 years, it has only been since 2001 that Sauder's IMBA course has been offered at the Antai School of Management.

The IMBA course offered at Jiaotong University provides, essentially, the same curriculum that full-time MBA students at UBC receive and the lecturers are from the main campus as well.

UBC IMBA professors specialize in business theory combined with a practical understanding of critical management issues which help IMBA students gain essential business knowledge and management skills.

The IMBA is offered on a part-time basis and delivers a comprehensive business education in less than two years.

Additionally, UBC IMBA's unique Integrated Core program provides IMBA students with a one-of-a-kind learning experience. For one section of the integrated core, students fly to Sauder's main campus in Vancouver, Canada, for an intensive two-week, full-time learning module.

This means that students of UBC's IMBA get the benefits of a part-time IMBA course in China and a full-time MBA course abroad.

The Sauder School of Business has received accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and has also been ranked among the top 100 MBA schools in the world.

This prestige from one of North America's finest business schools is sure to set IMBA students in the right direction for their future in the global marketplace. The global focus of UBC's IMBA is also compounded by the fact that as a Canadian university with Canadian professors operating in China, the focus of UBC's program at Jiatong is inherently international. The diverse nature of the program, its lecturers and its students ensure that there will not be an inordinate amount of focus on one region.

UBC has also had a strong presence in China through the amount of high profile officials that have attended the Sauder School of Business in Vancouver.

More than 500 senior Chinese officials have attended executive development programs at UBC.
