INTRODUCTION
For more than 100 years, Tianjin University has trained over 100,000 qualified graduates, most of whom are playing major and backbone roles in the various circles in society. They have made great contributions to the founding of China's mining, metallurgy and petroleum industry, the expanding of China's mechanical engineering, water conservancy and civil engineering, and to the development of China's textile, chemical industry, aviation, mechatronic technology.
Since the reform and opening up to the outside world, a discipline layout, with stress on engineering, incorporating science, engineering, economics, management, humanities, education, law and art has been formed in Tianjin University. Some disciplines with advantages and characteristics such as chemical engineering, precision instrument, and architecture, are all leading disciplines among institutions of higher learning in China.
Tianjin University, occupying an area of 1.37 million square meters, has a built-up area of 970,000 square meters. The university consists of 13 schools. By 2001, the university had owned 12 first-grade disciplines and 49 second-grade disciplines that confer Doctoral degree, 87 disciplines conferring Master's degree, 43 specialties available for undergraduates and 15 postdoctoral research fellowship programs. At present, there are 13 national key disciplines, 4 national key laboratories, 7 engineering and technology R&D centers and open laboratories at the level of ministry or commission, 1 national engineering research center, and 2 promotion centers of national key achievements of science and technology at the university.
Tianjin University currently has working staff of 4,700, including 1,100 professors and associate professors, 9 academicians (academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering), and 9 special-engaged professors of "Yangtze Scholar Award Project". The total student population of the university is over 20,000, among whom 5,000 are postgraduate students.
Tianjin University has established extensive cooperative relations with more than 60 universities from 30 countries and regions all over the world, and several dozens of multi-national companies. There are 400 overseas students from different countries studying now at this university.
